Why Is My Aircon Leaking Water? Common Causes & How to Fix It

If you’ve noticed water dripping from your air conditioner, you’re definitely not alone. A leaking aircon is one of the most common issues Queensland homeowners and businesses experience — especially during our hot and humid summers when systems work overtime. While a small amount of condensation is normal, visible leaking or pooling water is a sign that something isn’t quite right inside your unit.

Understanding the cause early can help prevent bigger problems like mould growth, water damage, or even complete system failure. Below are the most common reasons your air conditioner may be leaking water and what they mean for your system.

1. A Blocked or Dirty Drain Line

Your air conditioner removes moisture from the air, which drains away through a small pipe. Over time, this drain line can become blocked with dirt, dust, mould, or sludge. When the water can’t escape, it backs up and leaks out of the unit instead. This is one of the most frequent causes of water leaks and is easily prevented with regular maintenance.

2. Dirty or Clogged Filters

When filters are full of dust and debris, airflow becomes restricted. This can cause the evaporator coil to freeze. Once the ice melts, excess water may overflow the drain tray and leak from the unit. Clean filters not only prevent leaks but also improve cooling efficiency and air quality.

3. A Cracked or Rusted Drain Pan

Older systems or units exposed to moisture for long periods may develop a damaged drain pan. If the pan can’t hold water properly, it will leak. This usually requires repair or replacement by a qualified technician.

4. Low Refrigerant Levels

Low refrigerant can cause the evaporator coil to freeze — similar to what happens with dirty filters. When the ice melts, the system may leak water. Low refrigerant is often a sign of a leak in the system and should be checked by a licensed air conditioning technician.

5. Poor Installation or Incorrect Sizing

If your air conditioner wasn’t installed correctly or the system isn’t the right size for the room, it may struggle to drain properly. Incorrectly angled drain lines or poorly sealed components can also lead to water escaping where it shouldn’t.

6. Queensland Humidity Overload

Our extreme humidity can cause your air conditioner to work harder and produce more condensation than usual. If the system isn’t maintained or the drain line is partially blocked, this extra moisture can quickly turn into a leak.

What Should You Do If Your Aircon Is Leaking?

A leaking air conditioner is a sign that your system needs attention. Turning the unit off and booking a service is the safest option to prevent further damage. In many cases, a professional clean, drain line flush, or minor repair is all that’s needed to get your system running smoothly again.
